DESCRIPTION:

General Summary:

The Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) works directly under the supervision of a qualified Occupational Therapist, carrying out the program of rehabilitating patients.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Education, Training & Experience (includes licenses or certifications):

Education:

Graduate of an accredited Occupational Therapy Assistant Program.


Licensed to practice as a COTA in Washington.

Current Level C CPR


Experience:

Minimum of one year experience working as a COTA (home health experience preferred).

Minimum Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Ability to maintain professional demeanor in stressful situations.

Ability to work independently and as a team member.

Must be flexible and able to deal effectively with change or changing demands of the job.

Must have an in-depth and up-to-date knowledge of COTA theory and practice and the legal and ethical issues associated with them

Should be neat in work and appearance; be tactful, courteous, and ethical.

Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to under supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.


Knowledge of Medicare regulations/requirements

Working knowledge of palliative care for the terminally ill patient

Knowledgeable of the care for the chronically ill and frail elderly

Excellent time management, problem solving and customer service skills

Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Able to manage the caseload

Must have valid driver’s license and auto liability

Must have capability to access and use high speed internet

Operational knowledge of computerized clinical documentation including the use of laptop/notebook computers

Annually prepares realistic professional goals and reviews their progress with Supervisor.

GENERAL ACCOUNTABILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Performs services planned, delegated and supervised by the OTR.

Assists with O.T. evaluations, re-evaluations and discharge planning under the supervision of the OTR.

Documents in clinical record according to VHS policy/procedure.

Provides services and education to improve patient health outcomes, promote recovery, facilitate comfort, speed return to function and promote healthy behaviors. Appropriately involves client/family in care decisions.

Advises and consults with the client, his family and other personnel for continuity of care.

Provides services to client in his home on a regular basis.

Consults with physician and Visiting Health Services staff regarding discharge and prepares client and family for discharge. Prepares discharge summary.

Participates in and/or supports performance Improvement activities.
