Bastyr University, a private, regionally accredited institution, is seeking a wellness enthusiast, with solid experience as a fundraising professional, to manage our fundraising efforts in Washington state and California. The ideal candidate will be a fundraising generalist with proven success in securing major gifts, an understanding of data and development reports, annual giving programs, fundraising events, and other philanthropic giving channels. The position will be located at our Kenmore, Washington campus.

You like the idea of helping educate the next generation of leaders in integrative medicine and in helping deepen the resources of a true Pacific Northwest treasure Bastyr University the largest and most renowned school of its kind. You have a connection to integrative or alternative medical practices and can fluently speak of your personal wellness practices.

You actually love development work and are interested in developing your career track to eventually become a senior philanthropy officer. For you, fundraising is not just sitting in the office and making plans you are a planner, yes, AND you enjoy working on the front lines as well. You can, and do, currently ask people for philanthropic gifts on a regular basis.

You already understand the types of reports that a development office requires and know how to develop meaningful dashboards for executive leadership and board of the organization. Your skill in Raiser s Edge would be considered high-level.

Writing is both an innate ability and a practiced art for you. You craft persuasive, thoughtful communications pieces that drive donations. (NOTE: Bastyr doesn t want to feed you We want you to blow us away with the ideas you can bring to the table.)

Strategy is your middle name. You can make a rational game plan based on reality and then over-deliver through creativity and spunk. You have the capacity to craft a strategic and annual plan without being shown how. You ve done these, or participated in crafting these before. You have experience in budget development and oversight for a team.

Do you have strong verbal skills? CHECK. You are able to connect with seven-digit donors, foundation presidents, and board members. You are comfortable on stage or in front of one, important donor. You exude relatable confidence to your audiences, regardless of size.

You are proactive. You will thoughtfully take initiative to make things happen. AND, you have the spidey-sense and just a touch of conservatism in order to know when to self-edit.

You can think of many ways to do something. You have a creative, nimble mind. You have many ideas and the ability to focus on the most likely winners. No is not a stop sign to you. There is always a solution, or another step to take. You are a trouble-shooter by nature.

People respond well to your management. The idea of starting with a small team and growing it to greatness appeals to you. You craft great performers. You can help fundraisers focus on productive moves management. Asks are made in a timely manner and goals are surpassed. You can organize your staff, gain their agreements regarding goals, resource them to success and then celebrate.

You are efficient and effective. People would describe you as organized and as outcomes-focused. Those who are scattered, full of great ideas but with no ability to land the plane, are advised not to apply.

Events have been part of your experiences in nonprofit fundraising. You have been an event coordinator for fundraising events, or have proven skills in understanding how to create and run a successful, revenue-generating event.

You work well under pressure. Development has specific goals that ensure the organization is fiscally solvent. The expectation is that you will be committed to getting the job done and that you can thrive in a high pressure environment where outcomes are not always under your control. Our goals must be met and you will work in a supportive environment that understands your pressures but still expects performance.


Reporting to the Vice President of Advancement and Enrollment Services (VPAES), who has deep history with and clear understanding of the challenges of development work, the Associate Director of Development will participate in responsibilities such as being a hands-on manager of a small but growing team of fundraising professionals, developing and implementing strategies and programs for all aspects of the University s fundraising activities, securing major philanthropic donations, designing and directing fundraising events, and managing the Raiser s Edge donor database.

The top outcomes and priorities for this role include:
In concert with the VP of Advancement and Enrollment Services, develop and implement strategies and programs for all aspects of the University s fundraising activities, including annual gifts, major and planned gifts, grants, corporate and foundation gifts, donor recognition and stewardship.
Secure major donations for the university through moves management of your own, 40-unit major donor portfolio of individuals, corporations and foundations. Specific fundraising goals will be set and agreed upon annually.
Supervise and organize the Development Team with results-based management to meet and exceed yearly projections.
Events: assist in the design and direction of exceptional events focused on generating revenue and donor development.
Database Management: primary Raiser s Edge user for the University. Maintain data integrity, conduct data pulls, implement online fundraising campaigns, and e-mail correspondence to university donors, alumni and friends.
Communication: Write persuasive case statements and documents to further the development department s objectives. Deliver powerful verbal communications in one-to-one, small group and event settings.

Work Schedule:
This is a full-time, 40 hours per week position. Salary range is commensurate with experience +comprehensive benefits package which includes Health, Dental & Vision, 403b plans, Section 125 plans and generous paid time-off.


Bachelor s degree. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Professional certifications in fundraising for nonprofit organizations are a plus.
Five years or more of direct experience in development work for a nonprofit organization. Experience in higher education or larger institutions is a plus. Please note experience in for-profit sales will not be considered directly relevant to this role.
Must be a power user of the Raiser s Edge donor database system.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite of products, high proficiency is required for Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
Proven organization and prioritization skills, with demonstrated attention to detail.
Professional demeanor, demonstrating the ability to exercise confidential and skilled judgment.
Experience in higher education or larger institutional settings is a plus.
