Washington State has many large employers, from Amazon to Boeing, Microsoft, Providence Health & Services, and the University of Washington, not to mention the federal jobs in Washington State. Joint Base Lewis-McChord has around 56,000 workers, and the federal government reports around 75,000 employees in the state. The large companies listed above are all in the Seattle area, so job seekers still have plenty of opportunities to discover heading east over the mountains.
In addition to Seattle employers and City of Seattle jobs, workers looking to be near the action but not quite in it should look to the north in Everett or south for City of Tacoma positions. Local public transit is a big plus for those commuting in this region. A bit further south from Tacoma, the capital, Olympia, offers key state government jobs.
The major cities along Washingtons coast host many government agencies including the Departments of Energy, Justice and Transportation. The Departments of Agriculture and the Interior have locations further inland as well, serving the forestry industry and agricultural businesses.
Washington State city jobs provide law enforcement, social services, records administration, accounting and bookkeeping, entry level government jobs and other functions in cities and towns as far east as Spokane. Eastern areas of the state have warmer summers and colder winters than the moderate climate near the coast in the west and less of the well-known steady Seattle rain and fog.
Seattle-Tacoma airport provides direct connections to Asia for passengers from the continental United States and Canada, for air freight companies as well. Shipping is a major industry in the state, and accounts for many of the states 75 port districts. The ports of Seattle and Tacoma combined are one of the largest container shipping sources and destinations in the United States, providing office, warehouse and logistics jobs. An active ferry system, island tourism and pleasure boating all move tourists around the coast to destinations that hire year-round workers and summer staff.
From the active coast to the mountains, forests, and rural eastern parts of Washington State, workers can turn to large companies or find specialized work here in the Pacific Northwest.
